Margaritaville machine not shaving ice

When the shaver runs but little or no ice reaches the jar, work through these checks in order. Unplug the machine before you reach into the ice reservoir or the shaver. Items marked (manual) come from the Margaritaville user manuals; the rest are general tips.

1. The reservoir or lid isn’t locked (manual)

The machines won’t run the shaver unless the ice reservoir and its lid are seated. On the Bahamas, a fast-blinking red status light is the fault indicator — the manual’s fix is to check that the ice reservoir and lid are installed and locked. On the Bali, a blinking red Start/Stop button means a moveable part (ice chute or reservoir lid) isn’t locked.

2. The drink setting doesn’t match the liquid (manual)

On dial models (Key West, Fiji), the shaver runs for a time based on the Number of Drinks setting. The Fiji manual notes that if too little ice is shaved for the liquid in the jar, check that the setting matches the amount of liquid. Use our batch ratio cheat sheet.

3. The ice has fused into a block

Ice that sat in the reservoir and refroze into one lump can’t feed the shaving blade. Break it up with a plastic utensil (never a knife near the blade) or dump it and refill with fresh, loose cubes. Very large or hollow “crescent” cubes can also bridge over the opening — standard tray or bagged cubes work best.

4. Melted water is pooling

Empty the ice-melt reservoir (manual: Bahamas, Bali) and push it fully back into place. Wet, slushy ice shaves poorly.

5. The shaving blade is dull or nicked

The manuals say the blending jar, shaving blade and blending blade are subject to wear and should be inspected for nicks, chips or cracks — and not used if damaged (manual). A dull shaving blade produces coarse, slow ice. See blade replacement and parts by model.

6. Use Shave Only to top up

If a drink is thin, the manuals’ fix is to manually shave more ice: use Shave Only, then Blend Only to mix it in.
