Classic Frozen Margarita (From Scratch)
A fresh-lime frozen margarita with tequila, orange liqueur and simple syrup, sized for every Margaritaville frozen concoction maker.
Jump to recipe ↓
If you prefer the taste of fresh limes over bottled mix, this is your margarita. It’s the bar-standard 3 : 1 : 2 build (tequila : orange liqueur : lime) with a little simple syrup added, because frozen drinks taste less sweet than shaken ones — cold dulls sweetness on the tongue.
At 11 ounces of liquid for three drinks it sits comfortably inside every 36-ounce jar, and the batch table scales it for larger machines.
Classic Margarita recipe
Ingredients (3 drinks)
- 4½ oz blanco tequila (100% agave)
- 1½ oz orange liqueur (triple sec or Cointreau)
- 3 oz fresh lime juice (about 3 limes)
- 2 oz simple syrup (1:1 sugar and water) (paid link)
Plus: a full ice reservoir. Garnish: Lime wheel; salt or tajín rim. Glass: Margarita glass.
Instructions
- Make simple syrup ahead: stir equal parts sugar and hot water until dissolved, then chill.
- Fill the ice reservoir with slightly tempered ice.
- Add tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and syrup to the jar.
- Run the Shave ’n Blend™ cycle and taste — add a little syrup if your limes were very tart.
How much to make in your machine
Every Margaritaville frozen concoction maker is designed around a particular volume of liquid — the shaver portions ice for it. The table scales this recipe to the margarita liquid volume printed in each model’s manual (Key West DM1000 / DM1946 3 × 12 oz drinks: 9.75 fl oz; Bahamas DM0500 / Fiji DM2000 3 × 12 oz drinks: 13 fl oz; Tahiti DM3000 per 24 oz jar: 8.67 fl oz; Bali DM3500 half chamber: 11 fl oz; Bali DM3500 full chamber: 22 fl oz). Amounts are rounded to the nearest ¼ or ⅓ oz.
| Ingredient | Key West DM1000 / DM19463 × 12 oz drinks | Bahamas DM0500 / Fiji DM20003 × 12 oz drinks | Tahiti DM3000per 24 oz jar | Bali DM3500half chamber | Bali DM3500full chamber |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| blanco tequila (100% agave) | 4 oz | 5⅓ oz | 3½ oz | 4½ oz | 9 oz |
| orange liqueur (triple sec or Cointreau) | 1⅓ oz | 1¾ oz | 1¼ oz | 1½ oz | 3 oz |
| fresh lime juice (about 3 limes) | 2⅔ oz | 3½ oz | 2⅓ oz | 3 oz | 6 oz |
| simple syrup (1:1 sugar and water) | 1¾ oz | 2⅓ oz | 1½ oz | 2 oz | 4 oz |
Scaling is our calculation, not a manufacturer recipe. Fruit- and ice-cream-heavy drinks vary more; adjust with the Shave Only / Blend Only controls. The Key West DM1900 isn’t listed because we haven’t verified its manual yet.
Machine notes for this drink
- This batch uses about 11 fl oz of liquid for 3 drinks. If your drink comes out watery, the manuals’ first fix is to follow the recipe volumes or manually shave more ice; if it’s too stiff, add liquid and Blend Only.
Why this recipe works
Fresh lime brings aromatic oils that bottled juice lacks, and simple syrup dissolves instantly in cold liquid where granulated sugar would stay gritty. Keeping the alcohol at roughly a third of the liquid lets the ice freeze properly; more tequila than that and the slush turns loose.
About frozen margaritas
A frozen margarita lives or dies on the balance of spirit, sour and sweet. Keep tequila to roughly a third of the liquid; much more and the shaved ice won’t set. Citrus should be fresh or a good bottled juice, and the sweet element — mix, syrup, agave or liqueur — needs to be slightly more generous than in a shaken margarita because cold dulls sweetness.
Tips for the best texture
- Roll limes on the counter before juicing — you’ll get noticeably more juice.
- Strain the lime juice if you don’t like pulp catching in the shaving texture.
- Chill the tequila and syrup; cold liquids mean less ice melt during blending.
- Make a pitcher of the liquid mix before guests arrive so each batch is a 10-second pour.
- Never put anything but ice in the ice reservoir, and don’t fill the jar past its maximum line — both are warnings in every manual.
- Too thin? Hold the toggle in Shave Only for a few seconds, then Blend Only to mix it in. Too thick? Add an ounce of liquid and Blend Only.
Serving & make-ahead
Garnish with lime wheel; salt or tajín rim and serve in a margarita glass. Serve margaritas in chilled glasses with the rim prepared before you blend — salt for classic and citrus styles, sugar or tajín for fruit and spicy ones. For parties, pre-mix the liquid ingredients in a pitcher (everything except carbonated mixers) and keep it in the fridge; each batch then takes a ten-second pour and one button press. Set out lime wedges so guests can adjust tartness themselves.
Variations
- Tommy’s-style: Skip the orange liqueur and use agave syrup in place of simple syrup (use ¾ as much — it’s sweeter).
- Mezcal: Replace a third of the tequila with mezcal for a smoky edge.
- Cadillac float: Pour a half-ounce of Grand Marnier over the top of each glass after blending.
Mocktail swap
Use 4½ oz cold water or sparkling water in place of tequila, and an orange-flavored syrup or extra orange juice for the liqueur.

Frequently asked questions
How long does fresh lime juice last?
It tastes best the day it’s squeezed. Refrigerated, it’s fine for a day or two but loses brightness.
Why add simple syrup if there’s orange liqueur?
Frozen drinks taste less sweet than room-temperature ones. A small amount of syrup restores balance without making it cloying.
Can I double it?
Not in one 36 oz jar — use the Bali full-chamber column or make two batches.
How much ice should I put in the machine?
Fill the ice reservoir with ice cubes — the machine shaves the amount it needs for the cycle (dial models size it to the 1, 2 or 3-drink setting). The manuals recommend ice that has been out of the freezer for 10–15 minutes.
Will this work in a regular blender?
Yes — add about 1½–2 cups of ice per 12 oz drink and blend until smooth. The texture will be coarser than shaved ice.
