The Best Frozen Margarita (Manual Ratio)
The frozen margarita ratio printed in Margaritaville machine manuals — 1 drink to 3 — plus batch sizes for Bahamas, Key West, Fiji, Tahiti and Bali.
Jump to recipe ↓
This is the margarita the machine was designed around. The same five-ingredient formula — tequila, triple sec, lime, orange juice and margarita mix — appears in the Key West, Bahamas, Fiji and Bali manuals, just scaled to each machine’s batch size. If you’ve ever wondered why your frozen margaritas come out watery or too stiff, the answer is usually that the liquid volume doesn’t match what the shaver expects. Start here and you’ll get the texture the engineers intended.
The single-drink version below is exactly the Key West DM1000 manual’s 1-drink row: 3¼ ounces of liquid for one 12-ounce frozen drink. The batch table converts it to every machine we have a manual for, so you never have to do fraction math with a party waiting.
The Best Margarita recipe
Ingredients (1 drink)
- 1 oz gold or silver tequila
- ¼ oz triple sec
- ½ oz lime juice (paid link)
- ½ oz orange juice
- 1 oz margarita mix (paid link)
Plus: a full ice reservoir. Garnish: Lime wedge and a coarse-salt rim. Glass: 12 oz margarita or rocks glass.
Instructions
- Fill the ice reservoir with ice cubes that have sat out of the freezer for 10–15 minutes.
- Add the liquid ingredients to the blending jar — use the batch table below for your machine.
- Run the automatic Shave ’n Blend™ cycle (on dial machines, set the number of drinks to match the batch).
- Pour into a salt-rimmed glass and squeeze a lime wedge over the top.
How much to make in your machine
Every Margaritaville frozen concoction maker is designed around a particular volume of liquid — the shaver portions ice for it. The table scales this recipe to the margarita liquid volume printed in each model’s manual (Key West DM1000 / DM1946 3 × 12 oz drinks: 9.75 fl oz; Bahamas DM0500 / Fiji DM2000 3 × 12 oz drinks: 13 fl oz; Tahiti DM3000 per 24 oz jar: 8.67 fl oz; Bali DM3500 half chamber: 11 fl oz; Bali DM3500 full chamber: 22 fl oz). Amounts are rounded to the nearest ¼ or ⅓ oz.
| Ingredient | Key West DM1000 / DM19463 × 12 oz drinks | Bahamas DM0500 / Fiji DM20003 × 12 oz drinks | Tahiti DM3000per 24 oz jar | Bali DM3500half chamber | Bali DM3500full chamber |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| gold or silver tequila | 3 oz | 4 oz | 2⅔ oz | 3⅓ oz | 6¾ oz |
| triple sec | ¾ oz | 1 oz | ⅔ oz | ¾ oz | 1⅔ oz |
| lime juice | 1½ oz | 2 oz | 1⅓ oz | 1⅔ oz | 3⅓ oz |
| orange juice | 1½ oz | 2 oz | 1⅓ oz | 1⅔ oz | 3⅓ oz |
| margarita mix | 3 oz | 4 oz | 2⅔ oz | 3⅓ oz | 6¾ oz |
Scaling is our calculation, not a manufacturer recipe — except where it matches the manual row noted above. Fruit- and ice-cream-heavy drinks vary more; adjust with the Shave Only / Blend Only controls. The Key West DM1900 isn’t listed because we haven’t verified its manual yet.
Machine notes for this drink
- The ingredient list is written for a single 12 oz drink, which matches the 1-drink setting on Key West and Fiji dials. Multiply by 2 or 3 and set the Number of Drinks dial to match.
- This batch uses about 3.25 fl oz of liquid for 1 drink. If your drink comes out watery, the manuals’ first fix is to follow the recipe volumes or manually shave more ice; if it’s too stiff, add liquid and Blend Only.
Why this recipe works
Orange juice is the quiet hero: it softens the tequila and lime, and its natural sugars help the shaved ice freeze into a smooth slush instead of crunchy granita. The mix supplies sweetness and acid in one pour, which keeps the total liquid low enough for the ice to dominate.
About frozen margaritas
A frozen margarita lives or dies on the balance of spirit, sour and sweet. Keep tequila to roughly a third of the liquid; much more and the shaved ice won’t set. Citrus should be fresh or a good bottled juice, and the sweet element — mix, syrup, agave or liqueur — needs to be slightly more generous than in a shaken margarita because cold dulls sweetness.
Tips for the best texture
- Use bagged ice that has rested 10–15 minutes outside the freezer — every manual recommends it, because rock-hard ice shaves into coarse chips.
- Want it thicker? Hold the toggle in Shave Only for a few seconds, then Blend Only to mix the extra ice in.
- Measure with a jigger. Free-pouring is the #1 reason batches overflow or turn soupy.
- Rim the glasses before you blend; a frozen drink starts melting the moment the cycle ends.
- Never put anything but ice in the ice reservoir, and don’t fill the jar past its maximum line — both are warnings in every manual.
- Too thin? Hold the toggle in Shave Only for a few seconds, then Blend Only to mix it in. Too thick? Add an ounce of liquid and Blend Only.
Serving & make-ahead
Garnish with lime wedge and a coarse-salt rim and serve in a 12 oz margarita or rocks glass. Serve margaritas in chilled glasses with the rim prepared before you blend — salt for classic and citrus styles, sugar or tajín for fruit and spicy ones. For parties, pre-mix the liquid ingredients in a pitcher (everything except carbonated mixers) and keep it in the fridge; each batch then takes a ten-second pour and one button press. Set out lime wedges so guests can adjust tartness themselves.
Variations
- Top-shelf: Swap the triple sec for an orange liqueur like Cointreau or Grand Marnier and use 100% agave reposado tequila.
- Strawberry: Add ⅓ cup frozen strawberries per drink and reduce the margarita mix by a quarter so the batch doesn’t get too sweet.
- Skinny: Replace the mix with equal parts fresh lime juice and light agave syrup (about half the amount of mix).
Mocktail swap
Replace the tequila and triple sec with 1¼ oz of limeade plus a splash of orange juice per drink. Keep the total liquid the same so the ice ratio still works.

Frequently asked questions
Is this really the recipe in the Margaritaville manual?
Yes. The Key West DM1000/DM1946 manuals list 1 oz tequila, ¼ oz triple sec, ½ oz lime juice, ½ oz orange juice and 1 oz margarita mix per 12 oz drink. The Bahamas, Fiji, Tahiti and Bali manuals use the same ingredients in slightly different proportions for their batch sizes.
Silver or gold tequila?
The manuals specify gold tequila. Silver (blanco) gives a brighter, more citrus-forward drink; reposado adds a little vanilla. All three work — the ratio doesn’t change.
Can I make it without margarita mix?
Yes — see our Classic Frozen Margarita, which uses fresh lime and simple syrup instead.
How much ice should I put in the machine?
Fill the ice reservoir with ice cubes — the machine shaves the amount it needs for the cycle (dial models size it to the 1, 2 or 3-drink setting). The manuals recommend ice that has been out of the freezer for 10–15 minutes.
Will this work in a regular blender?
Yes — add about 1½–2 cups of ice per 12 oz drink and blend until smooth. The texture will be coarser than shaved ice.
What we changed
Rebuilt from the original page with exact manual ratios and per-machine batch sizes. The original listed a specific tequila brand; any 100% agave tequila works.
